Old-Fashioned Hospitality with Modern Conveniences
Whether you are coming to the area for business, a family visit, a special occasion, or a quiet getaway, this is the place! Built in 1886 the Victorian Rose Garden is part of the historic district of downtown Algonquin. We are located 45 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. This small town setting may be the perfect spot for you with so much to offer……
Within a short walk there are choice of 9 restaurants. You can enjoy small shops, the Fox River, walk or bike the Prairie Path/Fox River trail. Within a few miles, there is an abundant selection of restaurants, shops, fitness facilities, theaters and special attractions.
Upon your arrival you will find homemade goodies waiting for you. A small refrigerator in the upstairs “nook” holds complementary soda and water, and a place for a “doggy bag”. In addition to your guest room, you are welcome to enjoy common areas on the main floor. Play the Petroff grand piano in the parlor, read a book in the Great Room, share a cup of coffee in the kitchen. During pleasant weather, we hope you will enjoy the garden and relax on one of the porches or the patio.
History
In 1886, James Philp Esquire built this Victorian home and sold the property to his son James Harvey Philp for the grand total of $10 – plus love and affection, as a wedding gift for James H. and his bride Emma. In 1916 the home was sold to the Dammyer family who lived here for 54 years, followed by the Buttner family for 3 years. The fourth owners became Don and Sherry Brewer who moved in with their 3 children, Teresa, J. Richard, and Alicia in 1974. An award winning “Historically Sensitive” addition was built onto the home in 1982. The house was plaqued by the McHenry Historical Society and the Algonquin Historic Commission in 1994. In 2005, the Philp house was one of twenty-three homes featured in the book Historic Homes of McHenry County.
June 3, 1995 the James H. Philp house officially became the Victorian Rose Garden Bed & Breakfast. Sherry continues to host some of the nicest people who travel here from all over the world.

Beautiful B&B
We rode the Fox River Bike trail from Oswego to Algonquin and stayed here for one night. It is a beautiful B&B and Sherry is a wonderful and accommodating host! Our room was extremely comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. Enjoyed morning coffee on the porch overlooking the beautiful flower gardens. The B&B is perfect for bikers as we were able to park our bikes in a large locked garage and there are many dining options within a two block walk from the B&B. The bike trail is a few blocks from the B&B. Highly recommend this place to bikers and non-bikers alike!
The bad thing about my
The bad thing about my stay is when I have to leave and go back home. I love coming here. This has been my go to… get away…. with Sherry for 6 years. She is so welcoming and she makes a superb breakfast. The house is peaceful, safe, clean, warm, spacious, and quiet. I recommend this bed and breakfast if you need rest and relaxation. Instead of five stars…..
The Victorian rose garden gets 10 stars from Cindy. Love you Sherry.
What a great B and B
We love staying here! It’s our sixth time and can’t wait til our next visit. Sherry and Carolyn are so friendly, gracious and always make our stay everything we want it to be. The food is amazing and there’s nothing better than homemade cookies after our bike ride. We have stayed in numerous Bed and Breakfasts and this is truly the best!
Incredible hospitality
This is our second time of coming to the Victorian Rose B&B. Each time it has been an excellent experience filled with lots of pampering wonderful food and great hospitality. We also enjoyed the bike route which is just down the street and the wonderful restaurants uptown. It’s a great place to visit and the gals at the B&B made it even better. I highly recommend them
Lovely B&B with all the charm!
This was my first time at a B&B and I absolutely loved it! Sherry and Carolyn were so welcoming and their hospitality was truly wonderful. All of their thoughtful touches like coffee in the morning with a little snack before breakfast and tea and cookies are night were so appreciated. The room was clean, cozy, and charming. And their breakfasts were amazing! I would highly recommend the Victorian Rose Garden and am already looking forward to staying here again during my next visit!
truly wonderful!
We stayed for three nights in the Presidential Chamber – it was absolutely wonderful! Everywhere in the house are beautiful antiques, fresh flowers and relaxing spaces to unwind. We felt so pampered and really enjoyed our stay. Thank you to hostess Georgia for her friendliness and conversation!
Best Anniversary Ever – 12 Years & Counting!
Celebrating our anniversary has always been a special day but by far this year at the Victorian Rose Garden Bed & Breakfast has been the most memorable. Sherry made us feel welcome & at home. From the welcoming fresh baked cookies to the coffee & scones every morning, our stay was both restful & enjoyable each moment we shared at VRGBB! Our new go to place for a staycation to recharge & reconnect. Small town charm filled with warm and loving hospitality, Sherry is an inspiration to all small business owners new & seasoned. Thank you for making our stay one we will remember for a lifetime! ❤️
Restful and peaceful
This was a very calm and scenic place and a needed respite from life. Breakfast was amazing as was the coffee and tea in the evening. The room was perfectly sized and spacious for our family of three.
Thank you for another wonderful visit!
This was my fourth time to stay at the Victorian Rose Garden B and B. Once again, it was a special and memorable visit. Sherry’s welcoming hospitality, delicious meals, and the comfortable ambience that she has created, all combine to provide a rewarding experience.
The beautifully appointed historic home is pristine and filled with lovely objects all designed to make guests feel cozy and right at home. Special thanks for being the best!

Thanks for a perfect girls getaway! The house couldn’t be cuter, and the breakfast was so delicious! Just what we needed to relax for a bit.
Thank you for making our stay pleasant and for treating us like family. What a joy it was for me to play your gorgeous piano…priceless, in fact. Breakfast was truly amazing! We look forward to staying here again!
